Does the word “Sales” make you cringe?
If so, you are not alone. For many business owners Marketing is a mystery and Sales is a dirty word.
That’s why I was so excited when Tony Hoty, a marketing and sales leadership expert to the home improvement industry, agreed to share some of his knowledge with my audience on Radio Free Enterprise this week.
Here’s how I received my sales education:
Back in 2003, as a long-time business owner, I thought I knew what sales was all about. But I was just kidding myself.
My ignorance on the topic had cost my company hundreds of thousands of dollars in never-seen new clients over the course of many years. But I didn’t know it.
I didn’t know what I didn’t know. And I’m willing to bet that, when it comes to sales, you don’t know what you don’t know either.
My introduction to a true sales culture came immediately after the dot-com collapse. My tech startup had folded and I found myself with a six-figure lifestyle and a zero-figure income. I had a family to feed, a mortgage to pay, and bills piling up.
Out of desperation, I took a job as a salesman for a multimillion-dollar home improvement company and, though I started out very slowly, by the end of the year I was the top producer in the company and had completely turned my fortunes around.
What I learned on that job about the power of a professional sales culture is what Tony Hoty is all about. And if you haven’t had the advantage of a sales baptism by fire like I did, I encourage to listen to what Tony has to share on the topic.

“Well-trained salespeople command a higher price for their products and services. If you cannot clearly communicate and demonstrate your value then you are forced to accept whatever price the consumer decides.”
