Ted Williams, Subject Matter Expert

Are you a baseball fan?

If so, you’ve probably heard of Ted Williams, arguably the greatest hitter of all time.

Last night I watched an excellent PBS documentary about Williams’ life and career, where I learned many things I had not previously known about this immensely talented and incredibly complicated human being.

For example:
  • His parents never once saw him play professional baseball
  • He served as a fighter pilot in both World War II and Korea
  • He was Mexican-American
  • After retiring from baseball he authored an excellent book

The Science of Hitting, The Classic Guide to The Single Most Difficult Thing to Do in Sport, by the Greatest Hitter of All Time

Of all the traits that made Ted Williams a legendary player, modesty was not one.

Following Ted’s Example

I am not suggesting that you begin referring to yourself as The Greatest anything.

Instead I am recommending that you share your knowledge and passion – what makes you great at what you do – with as many people as possible, through as many channels as possible, as soon as possible.

Your generosity alone will position you as a subject matter expert, just like Ted.

Then you can just sit back and let the rest of us tell each other how great you are.
